Research Interests

My research focuses on phase transitions in functional materials whose structural, magnetic, electrical and thermal properties are strongly coupled. I am particularly interested in ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and ferroelastic phase transitions that permit large thermal changes to be driven by changes in magnetic field, electric field or stress field, and the physical mechanisms which yield to an enhancement in magnitude and reproducibility of these thermal phenomena. Interestingly, materials exhibiting giant caloric effects are potential candidates for their application in magneto-, electro-, and mechanocaloric solid state refrigeration, which promise more energy efficient and environment-friendly cooling techniques. The functional materials that I study include multiferroic nanostructures that possess strong magnetoelectric coupling, which are interesting in their own right for applications in sensors, actuators, and data storage.
